  11. I was overwhelmed with a testimony of Christ's mission and feel deep gratitude for the opportunity to see these pictures in real life. The work of Carl Bloch has permeated my spiritual growth as I have seen his paintings from early childhood in Church publications.
The dignified and yet intensely intimate presentation of Bloch's work by the BYU museum intensifies the power and deep understanding of the Savior which is evident.
The art of Bloch was amazing to me. His brushwork, his scope, his unfailing concentration on every detail, his ability to portray the range of human emotion, his use of color and light, and so much more all broadened and enriched the spiritual dimension. Truly, he knew the Savior.
My spirit was fed by my attendance here. My thanks to all who made it possible.

  12. I have a tremendous love of the arts and most particularly realistic art patterned after the masters of the renaissance. As a devote Christian, Carl Bloch has for several years been a favorite of mine. When the painting of Christ and the Pool of Bethesda came to the museum I was a frequent visitor of this magnificent depiction of the Savior and His ability to heal. I was ecstatic to learn of the this show "Carl Bloch; The Master's Hand for truly he is a masterful artist. I obtained my tickets early and was the first patron to enter the show at it's official opening on November 12, 2010 at 10:00 am. Thank you for the beautiful experience I have had at the Museum this day. My life has furthered been enriched.

  21. I find it fascinating to contemplate how, during the dawn of the restored gospel in latter days, men were inspired from ever corner of the earth to prepare the final dispensation of time. Even in for Carl Bloch, perceived tragic events such as the fire destruction of the kings Oratory only opened up a gait way for the commissioning of Bloch's work to be done providing for the advancement of the lords desired work.

  22. My great grandparents John and Karen Knudsen converted to the LDS faith in Copenhagen. John Knudsen was a cobbler and left mormon tracts in the shoes of his patrons. I had the opportunity to travel to Denmark last year and toured the Fredericksborg castle and viewed in person the 23 paintingsin the chapel that Carl Bloch was commissioned to paint. I wept because I could feel the divine inspiration that guided Carl Bloch's brush strokes. My favorite painting is of Christ being comforted in the garden during his darkest hours by a special commissioned angel of our Father in Heaven. Thank you BYU for bringing this fabulous exhibit to Utah.

  23. What an incredible showing. Thank you so much. My favorite of all of them is of the Savior with the shy little boy. And I cried as I looked at the mother and her daughter who had passed away. I cried for her sorrow, and I cried for the overwhelming joy the Savior was bringing. He has done the same for me.

I appreciate the message Bloch so clearly carries of his own Faith in Christ through his paintings and was inspired by his message tonight. 43. The thing that touches me most about Carl Bloch's paintings is the personal approach he takes to the Savior's life. It is one thing to read about a story from the scriptures and make a painting of the face value of the story. But Carl Bloch's works go deeper, trying to capture the emotion and love of the Savior. So, too, I appreciate the personal level of love that the Savior has for each of us. He knows us by name. He knows our needs. And he will share that love with us whenever we open our hearts to him.

I am made of aware of the Sanctuary of Christ within my inner soul that holds these sacred impressions of my redeemer. Visiting the exhibit today felt very familiar, it is a place that I go often to worship the God I love. This exhibit is an outward manifestation of my inner Sanctuary of Christ. 62. It is a very powerful experience to view these images in person. Carl Bloch was truly inspired to paint these poignant moments in the life of Christ. His compassion for those often overlooked or forgotten is moving and humbling.

  63. The etching of Peter at the pillar when he is falling apart since he denied Jesus Christ's name depicts the very feeling of sin, I think. We know we can be stronger and endure in Christ and not deny him yet when we fail it seems we have put Christ very last. My hope is that we come to know him as our friend and then it becomes easier to be stronger and not give into temptation or even deny Christ.

    ReplyDelete
  64. It is wonderful to see the divine inspiration given to man immortalized in the paintings of Carl Bloch. The emotion and strength of these paintings are an inspiration to achieve greater devotion to the Lord.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I touched by the last main painting. The widow going to Christ to comfort her while grieving. The naked and homeless turning to Christ. The man, chained turning to Christ, with pleading eyes. The blind, reaching to Christ. The girl, looking towards us, urging us to realize that we need to turn to Christ in all situations. When we are bound by sin, blinded by the world, or grieving our resurrected Christ can help us. And give us comfort in the folds of His robes. His atonement was for us.

    ReplyDelete
  66. It is indeed obvious through this exhibit that Carl Bloch was a master of art. Not only that, but his ability to evoke emotion, and stimulate the senses is near unparalleled when looking at his contemporaries. His colors, and sometimes the lack of them, force the viewer inside his world, Bloch's world, while simultaneously bringing to life the Earth as it existed 2,000 years ago. Absolutely incredible.

  67. I've never known it was possible to have a conversation with a piece of art. I feel as if I've spoken a thousand words today. In return, I've heard ten thousand.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The Doubting Thomas painting really spoke to me. the textures, the use of dark versus light, the consoling face of Christ... It was all so amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  69. As soon as my group and I entered the exhibit, our eyes welled up with tears. Truly the Holy Ghost was present testifying to us that Jesus is the Savior of the world. This is a sacred exhibit in rooms sanctified for the display of the life of Christ.

My favorite is of Christ laying his head on the angel's lap as he descends below all things. Like the angel, he asks us to lay ourselves at his feet (in his lap) when we suffer.

    ReplyDelete
  70. It's interesting the spirit the image of Christ conveys. The emotion variant in Christ's face really shows his love for us, and his humanity as well as divinity. Bloch Captured all of this and it is so touching.

  79. Carl's paintings have comforted me for years as I waded through life's trials, which I could not always share with others. The Jesus that Carl found... the personal, comforting Jesus... that was the man I wanted to find, the one that Carl's work invited me to.

It was a gift to see these paintings up close, to notice the details, and the differences between the studies and the final altar pieces. From these details and differences I learned a great deal about Carl himself and about his perspective on the Savior and his children. Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible.

  92. Ten days ago I stood in the dim Oratory of the Frederiksborg Castle in awe, captivated by the spirit and power of the Bloch paintings. The guard asked "are you Mormon?" Knowing how we love these depictions of our Savior. Now to return and see these beautiful altar pieces here in Provo is a great gift. Years ago, while collecting slides on the life of Christ, we found a black and white copy of the altar piece of Christ and the Child, we wrote to the church and the priest took a photo of the piece and sent it to us, we were amazed by it's beauty and now, it is here. If took all of the Christian virtues, faith, hope and charity for them to part with them. I truly appreciate their sacrifice and am changed because of the time I have had here today, sitting and contemplating the life of the Savior during His mortal life, and in my own life now. I am more firmly committed to worship Him through service to those around me because of His life and death and resurrection. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  114. Today is my second time through the exhibit and I still feel the same way as I did yesterday: uplifted and strengthened, both spiritually and intellectually. I appreciate the effort and dedication that went into making this possible. Your work is not going unnoticed. What a blessing. Thank you for bringing Bloch's powerful works of solace here to BYU.

  116. My favorite was the image of the angel coming to comfort the Savior. As I took in the image of him being encouraged, I felt spiritually strengthened myself.

  117. ITs amazing that no matter which painting of the life of Christ you look at, whether it is His birth, the blessing of the children, or His death - it illicits the same feelings of pure love and joy...

  118. Thank you for providing this opportunity to share not only beautiful art, but bring the emotion of the Savior's life to my children.

  119. In the introduction movie, it said that after the modernization, all his paintings were forgotten and criticized. But how could anyone forget something like this? I will never forget this experience.

  120. Incredible! Thanks for taking the time to bring the pictures close to home. I really appreciated the feeling walking around. Wonderful!

  121. Bloch depicts the facial expressions very well, explaining the feelings of the people and the mood of the painting. The faces of the people looking directly at us bring us in and show us to come unto Christ. Even though he was Lutherine, I feel he was inspired by God to paint and etch these for us so we can draw closer to Christ.

  122. My favorite image was Hercules saving Prometheus from the eagle, to me this symbolizes that we are not strong enough to cope with a lot of things in life on our own and need a helping hand with what we can't handle on our own. To me Hercules symbolizes christ saving mankind from the punishments we bring upon ourselves.

  123. This exhibit strengthened my testimony of the Savior. The tenderness with which Carl Bloch painted Him reminded me of the attributes Christ has. It also helped me understand how to apply the atonement in my own life. Thank you for bringing these paintings to BYU.

  124. This experience is one like none other. The Spirit is so strong when you think of what the scenes are of and how Carl Bloch must have been feeling as he created these masterpieces. There is so much devotion to detail it makes me feel like I can reach out and comfort the Savior when the crown of thorns is pressed into his head, that I can clean the blood off his head, or something. It seems like you could climb through the frames into a different world, a different life. Whether or no this world or life is better or worse is altered by the individual paintings. Seeing the artwork in this display reminded me of the power and meaning of the Atonement, and what it included for everyone.

  125. It was amazing because there was so many paintings that I had never known were painted by Carl Bloch. Like the one about the pool of what's it called. I know that no matter which painting I looked at I could feel it's power of love and joy.

  129. This exhibition was excellent. It was interesting to see the events that took place in Christ's life so well depicted by an artist who is not of our faith. I feel it is proof that we are all God's children and that He plays a role in each of our lives. It is our choices that make us who we become in the end. Thank you for putting this together!

  131. I loved the expression that Bloch was able to put into the faces of those around Christ. Each told a story that left me wondering what my reaction would be if I had the chance to fall at the Savior's feet. Great exhibit....

  135. This exhibit really brings home the reason Bloch's works were such a mainstay to Latter-day Saints before many good members of the church answered President Spencer W. Kimball's call for our own artists to rise up and portray the Savior's life. We are blessed to now have Greg Olsen, Simon Dewey, Del Parson, Walter Raine, and many others. How grateful I am many of Carl Bloch's works have had staying power. I saw many of his images today that I haven't seen since I was a child. I will return with my family so they can experience the spirit Bloch brings in his portrayal of the Savior's life.

  150. What a joy to experience Bloch's amazingly realistic artwork. I was especially struck by the placement of the large pieces, and the opportunity to sit and ponder "in their light." Thank you for being the kind of institution that is allowed to show masterpieces such as these: seeing the art in person is truly a personal and spiritually moving experience.

  151. Thank you for bringing this magnificent exhibition here. It was beyond my imagination to see these masterpieces in person. The figures, especially Christ, were completely alive and seem to step off the canvas. It is a spiritual thrill to see these paintings.

  152. I love the work of Carl Bloch. His paintings truly touch the heart. When we visited Denmark we had the opportunity of seeing his work at the Castle and feel his wonderful feelings for our Savior. What a talent and blessing to have his work displayed for all of us to enjoy

  153. I love his attention to the little things of life. I guess the things that we think are little. He had an eye to see those that were in need, just as Christ does. The Gethsemane painting is the best description of the pain and agony Christ had to bear to carry out the Atonement. It is easy to see that His energy was drained and that He really needed the comfort.

I've seen and admired these paintings all my life, but did not know the name or background of the artist, or even that the same one did all of them. Being here today gave me an opportunity to look more closely at the symbols in these beautiful pieces and think about what Christ's atonement really does mean in my life.

What a blessing to all of us that he found his calling in life and was able to share his talents and invitation to the Savior with so many.
